But besides the question of what elements a design guideline should contain (more on that in a future newsletter), in my opinion there is not enough thought about what shape the guideline\u2019s framework should take \u2013 an underestimated point which plays an important role in ensuring success.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In our experience, a design guideline is not a rigid system \u2013 it is always as individual as the organization for which it is created. That\u2019s why, in order to achieve maximum success, we recommend that you think about the following points before making a design guideline:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. Why does your company want to create a design guideline?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 20px;\">\n<p>On the surface, it\u2019s often about uniform design language, brand recognition and\/or consistent customer experience at the company\u2019s various contact points. However, there may sometimes be deeper reasons as well, for example:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 20px;\">\n<li>to save on potential product costs through more frequent usage of identical parts<\/li>\n<li>design departments wanting a basis upon which to be able to evaluate drafts or to implement them in the company<\/li>\n<li>the optimization of time-to-market KPIs<\/li>\n<li>the reduction of development costs (internal and external designer)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is essential to know these reasons during the creation process \u2013 they reflect the reality of your company and guarantee that at the end of the day, your guideline will be widely accepted and used.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>2. Who is going to be using this design guideline?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 20px;\">\u201cThe designers of course&#8230; also possibly Marketing and Brand Management. Maybe Product Management &#8230;.\u201d And how about the Development department? \u201cYes, they will too\u2026.\u201d We have had this and similar conversations many times over. It is important for you to understand who is really supposed to use the guideline. Everyone has different needs as to the information they require from a design guideline. You should know in advance who your target group is and what added value you can offer them. For example, if you later want to give access to external design agencies, it might be interesting to integrate recurring briefing elements into a separate part of the guideline.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4 style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>3. What branding, marketing and design guidelines already exist and how do the interfaces work? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 20px;\">Usually there are already other various departmental guidelines \u2013 CI, Brand, UX, etc. The sovereignty of these documents is usually outside the design department\u2019s sphere of influence. Clarifying early on how you update information (e.g. about CI elements) in the product design guideline greatly simplifies in-house collaboration. So make a list of those responsible for the other guidelines and agree with them as to how one can best update information.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h4 style=\"margin-top: 20px;\"><strong>4. Will the design guideline be included as a mandatory component for a release in your company\u2019s Stage-Gate processes?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div style=\"margin-top: 20px;\">If your answer to this is fundamentally \u201cno\u201d, we recommend not putting too much energy into the development of the design guideline \u2013 better to invest the time turning that \u201cno\u201d into a \u201cyes\u201d. We have seen too many design guidelines die in day-to-day business because they were not anchored in a Stage-Gate process. It is only in that moment that it has relevance in the development process that a design guideline can no longer be ignored by other departments.
